Sigurd Mathisen (April 26, 1884 – March 4, 1919) was a Norwegian speed skater, world champion and world record holder on 500m. He was an older brother of Oscar Mathisen.
Mathisen won a gold medal at the 1904 World Allround Speed Skating Championships for Men, where he also was given the victory on 1500m (shared), 5000m and 10000m.[1] All distances were originally won by Peter Sinnerud, who was later disqualified for professionalism, after which Sigurd Mathisen was declared world champion.
In 1908 Sigurd Mathisen improved the world record on 500m, finishing on 44.4 seconds (sharing the record with Johan Vikander, who also finished on 44.4 seconds in the same event).[2] The record lasted four years, until beaten by Oscar Mathisen in 1912.
